The issue of solidarity and unity is rather complicated. People are united during époques of totalitarian regimes because they are united, for example, by some idea of Stalin. In a democratic state people must have different opinions and such different opinions must be respected. What happened in Lithuania 20 years ago was solidarity, however it cannot be compared with the present day Lithuania with numerous opinions and all of them right.

Small portion of the bricks will be redone due to the mistakes and some technical problems. There are still 170 more bricks that can be sold untill March 11th, 2011.

“The Tree of Unity” – a monument for the millennium of Lithuania

Today, as never before, the Lithuanian people are scattered all over the world. Some of them are looking for an easier life and the others – having forgotten their roots and patriotism, are determined to live in any country of the world, but not in Lithuania.

Therefore, we think that it would be meaningful to create a symbol of solidarity of Lithuanians living all over the world as an expression of the common aim of all of us to be together and to live and work for the benefit of Lithuania.

For a long time we could not decide what the motive of this monument should be - easy to understand both, for the older and younger generation, to make us feel proud, full of national spirit and at the same time modern as it is a creation of the twenty-first century. We looked for wisdom in the authentic folk culture of our country which from its monodic and harmonious songs to the wooden folk sculpture or folk clothes is worth the most beautiful epithets.

We see the symbolic Tree of Life as the only possible symbol for the Monument “The Tree of Unity” in Lithuania. The symbolic Tree of Life should become the place which must be visited by each Lithuanian of the world.

The sculpture will be about 9 metres high cut from stone with the image of the authentic spindle on one side and the other side reflecting the modern world ornamented according to the spindle decoration principle, but reflecting information relevant for the commemoration of the Millennium of Lithuania. The centre of the Sun-shaped circle would be filled with stamped texts about the most outstanding personalities of the Millennium of Lithuania.

The place for this sculpture has already been found – Vingis Park in Vilnius where the Song Festivals of the Lithuanians of the World united us and the most important meetings of Sąjūdis Movement were held.

Sculptor Tadas Gutauskas (TaDas), Architect Rolandas Palekas.
